A Short But Sweet Guide to Eating Healthy on the Job
For some small business owners, taking care of their business is such a high priority that at times they can forget to take better care of themselves. Where this can become particularly evident is in the dietary choices that they make. When pressed for time, it can be tempting and all too easy to simply order takeout, or grab a doughnut off of a snack tray, but this is not going to do you any favors in the long run. Eating a healthy and balanced diet has benefits that go far beyond your waistline; it can improve your energy and mood and even help you live longer. This guide isn’t going to prescribe you with a miracle diet, rather provide you with some suggestions that you can use to make better choices and work with your on the go lifestyle.
Switch to whole grains. Whenever possible, go for whole grain products as opposed to bleached flour. While some people prefer the texture and flavor of white bread, the more refined and simple sugars contained in theses products can contribute to weight gain. Whole grains take longer to break down in your body, making them a more healthy and sustained source of energy. After a while, you may find that you no longer miss white bread, and this habit should serve you well.
Keep healthy snacks on hand. One of the most common scenarios that can happen to even the most ardent proponents of healthy eating is this: you find yourself somewhere between meals, feeling a little hungry. You notice an attractive, (but unhealthy) piece of food and eat it, then feel upset because you knew you shouldn’t. Instead of going through this time and time again, you should find some healthy snack products that you like and keep them on hand for these moments. Many people make the common mistake of thinking that not eating will always be more healthy than eating something. This is simply not true. It is far better for you to eat a small healthy snack to keep you going between meals than for you to refuse to eat, until something tasty comes along. Maybe if we all had great self control these emergency snacks wouldn’t be necessary, but kidding yourself thinking you don’t need them will more often than not lead to eating something you shouldn’t.
Stay hydrated. Staying hydrated is easy. All it takes is making the conscious choice to drink the water that your body needs, however many business owners neglect to do this because they are distracted by other concerns. While it may sound silly, set a reminder on your phone to have a glass of water at different points during the day. IF it works for a meeting, it will work for consuming fluids, but usually meetings don’t result in better looking skin and a more stable appetite.
